Searching Strategies

Keyword search: Quick way to retrieve many results.

Subject search: Retrieves search terms in the subject heading category. Subject headings are predetermined words assigned to a topic. 


Boolean logic (broad vs. narrow)
AND: Limits Search e.g. ostracism and psychological effects
OR: Expands Search e.g. crack or cocaine or coke
NOT: Excludes terms e.g. manic depression  not bipolar disorder
EXACT PHRASE: Putting quotations around phrase/sentence e.g. "assisted suicide"


Truncation: Uses symbols or wildcards to replace letters in words. You use them to get more results.
e.g. Schizophren* searches schizophrenia, schizophrenic, schizophrenic
